Eileen’s Mobile Rabbit Hutch Built from Walk-In Coop Plans

Large walk-in rabbit hutch on wheels

Eileen in Littleton, New Hampshire, used The Garden Coop walk-in chicken coop plans to customize a moveable home for her bunnies. The rest of this post talks about how she built her rabbit hutch and comes directly from her. . . .

How we built our rabbit hutch using The Garden Coop walk-in coop plans

Hello! We used your wonderful plans to make a coop for our rabbits. We made three big changes:

  • Instead of putting this on a permanent foundation, we stapled wire across the bottom (2×3, plastic coated) to let the grass grow through, and we move it every week or two to give the bunnies new ground. It’s pretty heavy, obviously, but we lever it up onto a bunch of 3″ PVC pipe and it’s quite easy to roll around! [Editor’s note: if you’re looking for a robust, off-the-shelf solution for making a large chicken coop mobile, check out this bolt-on chicken coop wheels kit.]
  • We made the coop area only half as tall and use the top for storage of hay, alfalfa pellets, etc. It’s nice and dry up there!
  • As you can see in the picture, the buns like to hang out right in front of the door. So after a few weeks, we decided to shorten the door so I didn’t have to shove them out of the way all the time. It worked really well, and now I don’t have to worry that they’re going to hop out around my feet when I’m coming in.

I’ve never had rabbits before and am very pleasantly surprised — I was expecting something like furry chickens, but they’re much more like cats or dogs. Way more tolerant of petting than our poultry. 🙂

Thanks for the plans. The bunnies are very happy, and your plans made it really easy to build something strong and spacious for them.

Thanks to Eileen for sharing her experience using The Garden Coop to keep rabbits. Here are all our posts tagged “rabbits” if you’re curious how to build a rabbit hutch (or chicken coop, of course) — and what others are doing to make our designs their own. And if you are keeping rabbits or other non-chicken critters in one of our coop designs, let us know in the comments below.
